Math

At Our Lady of Grace Catholic School, our K–8 Mathematics program develops confident problem-solvers and mathematical thinkers prepared for the challenges of the future.

Our Mathematics program is thoughtfully designed to nurture mathematically proficient students who can think critically, reason logically, and apply their knowledge to real-world situations. Rooted in the California Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, our curriculum emphasizes a balanced approach that integrates conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and application.

In Grades K–2, students develop a strong foundation in number sense, place value, and operations, while being introduced to basic geometry, measurement, and patterns. Through hands-on activities and visual models, young learners explore mathematical ideas and begin to articulate their thinking with confidence.

In Grades 3–5, students deepen their understanding of multiplication and division, fractions, decimals, and multi-step problem solving. Emphasis is placed on mathematical reasoning, explanation of strategies, and connecting math to everyday life. Students begin to engage in mathematical discourse and explore multiple pathways to solutions.

In Grades 6–8, students transition to more abstract reasoning, preparing them for high school algebra and beyond. Core topics include ratios and proportional relationships, expressions and equations, geometry, statistics, and functions. Students are encouraged to model with mathematics, critique reasoning, and engage in complex problem solving using a variety of strategies and tools.

Throughout all grade levels, our teachers incorporate technology, manipulatives, cooperative learning, and differentiated instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners. Math instruction is guided by the Standards for Mathematical Practice, which promote perseverance, precision, modeling, and strategic use of tools.

Our goal is to foster not only strong mathematical skills but also a positive math identity—cultivating students who are confident, curious, and ready to take on the challenges of a dynamic and data-driven world.
