English

At Our Lady of Grace Catholic School, the English Language Arts (ELA) program empowers students to become strong readers, writers, and communicators.

Our program is designed to develop confident, critical thinkers and effective communicators through a comprehensive, standards-based approach. Aligned with the California Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts, our curriculum integrates reading, writing, speaking, and listening across all grade levels.

In Grades K–2, students develop essential early literacy skills through a balanced approach to reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Daily instruction focuses on phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. Students are introduced to a rich variety of texts and begin learning how to express their thoughts through simple narratives and shared writing experiences. Oral language development and listening skills are reinforced through read-alouds, discussions, and interactive activities that support both language and comprehension growth.

In Grades 3–5, students transition from learning to read to reading to learn. They read a broad range of literary and informational texts, analyze themes and structures, and begin to use evidence to support their ideas. Writing instruction includes opinion pieces, informative reports, and narratives, with a growing emphasis on planning, organization, and revision. Students continue to develop grammar and vocabulary skills in context and build confidence in presenting their ideas through collaborative discussions, presentations, and projects.

In Grades 6–8, students engage with increasingly complex texts that challenge them to think critically, compare perspectives, and draw conclusions. They study a variety of genres, including classic literature, nonfiction, poetry, and contemporary works. Writing becomes more analytical and refined, with a focus on argumentative, expository, and narrative styles. Students practice research skills, citation, and formal presentation, preparing them for high school and beyond. Class discussions emphasize respectful dialogue, text-based reasoning, and thoughtful communication.

Across all grades, students engage in collaborative discussions, oral presentations, and integrated language practice that supports both academic achievement and personal expression. The program fosters a lifelong love of reading, an appreciation for diverse perspectives, and the communication skills necessary for success in all disciplines.
