Arts
At Our Lady of Grace Catholic School, we believe every child is an artist. Art classes provide hands-on opportunities to imagine, create, and reflect—nurturing not just skill, but confidence and joy.
Our Visual Arts program invites students to explore their creativity, develop artistic skills, and express themselves through a variety of visual media. Aligned with the California Arts Standards for Visual Arts, our K–8 curriculum nurtures imagination, observation, and personal expression while building a foundational understanding of artistic techniques, tools, and traditions.
In Grades K–2, students are introduced to the elements of art—line, shape, color, texture, and form—through hands-on exploration using paint, clay, drawing, and collage. Lessons encourage creative thinking, motor skill development, and an appreciation for beauty in the world around them.
In Grades 3–5, students begin to refine their techniques and explore more complex ideas and materials. They learn about famous artists, various art styles, and cultural art traditions while applying their understanding to their own compositions. Projects integrate cross-curricular themes and emphasize planning, reflection, and self-expression.
In Grades 6–8, students expand their artistic vocabulary and explore advanced concepts such as perspective, proportion, symbolism, and mixed media. They engage in more independent work, critique and interpret art with greater depth, and learn to express personal meaning and social themes through their creations.
Across all grade levels, the Visual Arts program fosters creativity, confidence, and problem-solving. Students are encouraged to take risks, appreciate diverse perspectives, and develop an understanding of art as a powerful form of communication, grounded in both tradition and innovation.
