PRINCIPAL FOR A DAY

On Tuesday, April 15, Mrs. Hause shared her duties as principal with Miss Hailey M.  Hailey won this experience through an opportunity drawing at last year's Spring Gala.

Hailey began her day by greeting students, parents, and teachers in front of the school next to the sign marking her special day.  She visited each classroom, worked with first graders in the Reading Center with Mrs. Quint, read a story to the first graders in their classroom, did morning and lunch recess supervision, had a special lunch brought in from a nearby restaurant, prepped for the quarter assembly, helped conduct the recognition portion of the assembly, and summoned the students for dismissal Tuesday afternoon - a full day!!

She did an especially great job saluting Courtney V. and her parents.  Courtney had toured the classrooms the previous week with the Student Council moderators informing students of her alopecia aereata.  After raising awareness, The Student Council sponsored an Alopecia Awareness Day on Tuesday, April 15.  Each child bringing in money to donate to Alopecia research and support of patients was allowed to wear jeans.  This drive brought in $340, and Hailey helped in recognizing Courtney's amazing attitude and help with this concern.

Congratulations, Hailey.  I can't wait to see who will be Principal for a Day in 2009!

GRANDPARENTS' DAY

One of the best parts of Catholic Schools Week is our Grandparents' Day.  This year we began the day with liturgy led by our fourth graders.  How great to pray together, surrounded by our grandparents and special family members!  Then, during this, our 50th anniversary year, we saluted dance through the five decades while we shared breakfast with our family members.  Each class learned a dance as part of its physical education class and then entertained us all on stage.  From the '50's and the Hand Jive, the Swing, and the Hokey Pokey to the present day, we had a great time.  We thank Mrs. Patrick and Mrs. Medigovich for orchestrating our dance revue, Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Church for serving as co-chairs of Grandparents' Day, and Mr. and Mrs. Sweet for underwriting all those delicious goodies.  These smiles say it all!

NEXT BREAKFAST WITH THE PRINCIPAL  IS SCHEDULED FOR TUESDAY, APRIL 29.  PLEASE JOIN US IN LAUERMAN HALL.  THE SUBJECT WILL BE ITBS TESTING.

                                                    REVISED SHOE POLICY

The school's shoe policy has been revised slightly.  Please read carefully.  My thanks to members of the Advisory Council who have investigated nearby stores in which shoes adhering to the policy can be purchased.  I appreciate your time and efforts.  The two differences are the inclusion of the gray color and the removal of the term "cross trainer".  That label has been diluted over the past two years to include shoes that do not meet our needs.

Neat, clean, and presentable athletic schoes are required as part of the school uniform and will be used for P.E. classes as well.  The acceptable colors are solid white, black, gray, navy or royal blue, or any combination of these colors.  A SHOE TRIMMED WITH ANY OTHER COLOR WILL NOT BE ALLOWED.  No flashing lights; no plaid or patterned shoes or laces.

Shoes must be fastened with velcro or laces only.  Laces should match the dominant color of the shoes and be the appropriate length to secure the shoe.  The shoe can be a low or mid top, but no high tops above the ankle are permitted.

The sole should have good traction and must have a visible, exterior arch or indent in the mid-sole, indicating the supportive arch.  In other words, there must be a recessed part of the sole that does not touch the ground (no completely flat bottomed shoes).

No "skater" type shoes, no Vans, Heely's, Keds, or Converse canvas shoes.  No dress shoes, sandals, boots, hibing shoes, slip-ons, high heels or otherwise non-athletic shoes.

Suggested brands and models of shoes that fit this description:

  • New Balance 621 Cross Trainer    comes in all white, all black, and white with navy blue trim.  It is carried in toddler, child, and adult sizes.  It also comes in wide and extra wide sizes.  The child's version can be purchased with either laces or velcro.  Found at Sport Chalet, Kohl's, and JC Penney's - in store or online.
  • Nike VXT Trainer Shoes    This is an all white shoe found at the same stores mentioned above at a comparative price.
  • Skechers Energy Everlast    This is a men's shoe which comes in white with navy trim.  Available at JC Penny and on line.

Thank you for your help in this regard.

PICTURE TAKING POLICY

The policy regarding picture taking is as follows:

"Picture taking (stills or video) during school hours and during school curricular events will be authorized only through the principal or a teacher." (Parent Handbook, p. 23)

This policy was incorporated to prohibit disruptions of academic or supervisory work on the part of staff members.  Parents and family members are certainly free to take pictures of their children during extracurricular events that do not compromise the work of coaches, supervisors, etc.  Persons who are authorized to take such pictures during the school day, beyond staff members, will receive permission through the principal or teacher and receive a special visitor's pass in the office.
