    PE Curriculum

    August, 2011

    Dear Parents,

Welcome to the Physical Education program. I look forward to working with all of the students this year. Physical education contributes to the overall growth and development of each student at the elementary and junior high levels. It is an important component in developing a well-rounded and confident individual. The goal of the physical education program is to provide students with activities and information that will encourage them to maintain and live a healthy lifestyle.

At the K-2 level, the initial focus is on development of balance and movement, such as walking, hopping, skipping, and jumping. Manipulative skills are introduced in the form of throwing, catching, and kicking. Exercises focus on flexibility and movement. Games are introduced.

In the 3rd and 4th grades, improvement of balance and locomotor skills becomes more important as more complex activities and games are introduced. Exercises involving cardiovascular endurance and muscular strength are added to the initial flexibility and movement routine. The Presidential Physical Fitness Challenge is introduced in the 3rd grade.

In grades 5 through 8, greater emphasis is placed on cardiovascular and muscular endurance, flexibility, and stretching in the exercise routines. More complex games are introduced, and students are given more opportunity to act as team leaders in group activities. Sportsmanship and responsible behavior are key elements emphasized in the physical and social development of the student.

Physical education class encourages students to become more physically active, improve their skills, set goals, and develop self-discipline.

I look forward to working with each and every student this year.

    Sincerely,

    Mrs. Medigovich

    Summer 2011
    Dear students and parents,

Summer has arrived and with it come thoughts of vacations and outdoor activities. It is the perfect ime to get up, get out, and get motivated. Summertime activities often include walks at the park, swimming at the pool, and visits to the beach and bay. All of these activities contribute to a healthy lifestyle that includes regular exercise and good nutrition Exercise can be as simple as walking the dog, mowing the lawn, or playing tag with friends. These activities, on a regular basis, will help you imporve your muscular strength, endurance, and flexibility. Staying active is a great way to have fun, make friends, and enjoy time with your family.

    Have a wonderful summer,
    Mrs. Medigovich
